This is especially true for women and underrepresented minorities, who usually have fewer opportunities to develop curiosity in CS and STEM more broadly (Code.org & CSTA, 2018). The oft-invoked link between expanding universal entry to CS education and narrower participation and curiosity gaps in CS and STEM does have some empirical support, however definitely not enough to conclude that one necessarily leads to the other. Leaders and educators should ensure CS policies are applied in inclusive methods to extend the chances of narrowing these persistent gaps. We encourage consideration to both the classroom experiences of underrepresented scholar teams and CS educator range, too, as race- and gender-based role modeling are important predictors of future interest in CS and STEM.
